Martha's Vineyard AVA is a wine-growing region in the US state of Massachusetts recognized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives since January 3, 1985 .

location

The American Viticultural Area Martha's Vineyard is spread across both islands Martha's Vineyard and Chappaquiddick within the administrative unit of Dukes County . Nowadays the larger island is mainly known as a holiday resort and is heavily visited by tourists in the summer months. Martha's Vineyard is visited by over 100,000 visitors, especially around July 4th, the American national holiday . Many famous people and members of the American upper class have villas on Martha's Vineyard, which has given the island the reputation of a posh resort.

history

The establishment of the designation of origin Martha's Vineyard AVA in 1985 was by no means undisputed and was particularly contested by the Californian winery Heitz Cellars with their 16 hectare vineyard called Martha's Vineyard . The internationally known winery feared that the value of its name would be diluted. The federal supervisory authority, however, argued that viticulture had been practiced on the island since 1602 and granted the application to establish the designation of origin.

climate

The climate, determined by the Atlantic Ocean, is slightly warmer than that of the nearby Massachusetts coastline. The growing season of the vines on the island is almost 3 weeks longer.
