Martin Haug (Bishop)

Martin Haug (born December 14, 1895 in Calw ; † March 28, 1983 in Freudenstadt ) was a Protestant theologian and former regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg .

Life and work

Haug attended school in Calw . Then he had to do military service, where he was badly wounded in the First World War . Then he attended the Evangelical Theological Seminars in Maulbronn and Blaubeuren , where he passed his maturity. He then studied Protestant theology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and joined the Normannia Tübingen association . He graduated in 1925 with the graduation to the Dr. theol. from. Then he was pastor in Tübingen and teacher at the Urach theological seminary . In 1935 Haug became director of the Evangelical Parish Seminary in Stuttgart. At the same time, as senior church councilor, he was a member of the church leadership of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg. After the Second World War he was appointed prelate appointed and deputy regional bishop Theophil Wurm , his successor Haug on 14 December 1948 by the country Kirchentag chosen and the Oberkirchenrat was.

In 1952, Haug was elected to the EKD Council by the Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany , of which he was a member until 1967. Awards and honorary positions

Haug received in 1949 an honorary doctorate from the Protestant theological faculty of the University of Tübingen ( D. theol. Hc).

In addition to his job as a pastor or regional bishop, Haug also held several honorary posts. In 1935 he was a member of the regional advisory board of the Evangelical Community Service, in 1937 a member of the regional brotherhood council of the confessional community and in 1940 an elected member of the 3rd regional church convention. From 1946 he was on the board of directors of the mother house for Protestant nurses in Großheppach (today Weinstadt ), and also a representative of the Württemberg regional church at the full assembly of the Lutheran World Federation in Hanover in 1952.

Haug spent his old age in Freudenstadt. From here he traveled extensively and was also a guest preacher in various congregations. Haug also published some books and writings.
