Martin Heller (born October 25, 1952 in Basel ) is a Swiss cultural entrepreneur, exhibition organizer, curator and author .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1971, Martin Heller initially trained as a drawing teacher at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel before studying ethnology, art history and European folklore at the University of Basel . At the same time he wrote art reviews, worked as an intermediary and curated the first exhibitions.

From 1986 he was a curator, then from 1990 director of the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich , from 1997 also director of the Museum Bellerive Zürich. There he is responsible for the fields of visual communication, design, photography and popular culture, for the poster collection (until 1995) and for the graphic collection (until 1992 and again from 1997) and realizes a large number of exhibitions and publications. As the first chairman of the Swiss Werkbund he realized a. a. numerous conferences on topics such as home, quality and ecology as well as design competitions. There are also courses at museums and universities in Germany and abroad, including Montreal , Paris , the University of Zurich , and ETH Zurich . Between 1995 and 1997 he was visiting professor at the State University of Design in Karlsruhe , from 2000 he was visiting professor at the universities of Bern (postgraduate course in subject didactics), Basel (cultural management), at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (exhibition and cultural communication management) and at the university St. Gallen (culture and economy). From 1999 to 2003 Martin Heller was artistic director of the Swiss national exhibition Expo.02 . He then worked as a self-employed cultural entrepreneur (Heller Enterprises Zurich), author and exhibition organizer with cultural-political projects, particularly in Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland. From 2004 to 2008 he was a member of the Board of Directors of Vitra Holding AG. From 2005 Martin Heller has been the artistic director of Linz 2009 - European Capital of Culture . From 2010 he developed the content of the Agora in the Humboldt Forum Berlin.

Heller lives in Zurich and Berlin .
