Martin Honecker (theologian)

Martin Honecker (born May 2, 1934 in Ulm ) is a German Protestant theologian . From 1969 to 1999 he was professor of systematic theology and social ethics at the Protestant Theological Faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

Life

Martin Honecker, son of the Protestant pastor Karl Honecker, grew up in Klingenstein and attended grammar school in Ulm. From 1953 to 1957 he studied Protestant theology in Tübingen , in the Tübinger Stift and in Basel . In 1957 he passed the first theological examination and in 1961 the second theological examination at the Württemberg regional church. After a year as vicar, Honecker was from 1958 to 1965 assistant at the Evangelical Theological Faculty in Tübingen and repetent at the Evangelical Monastery.

In 1960 he received his doctorate with a thesis on “Church as a Shape and Event”, and in 1965 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on canon law with the old Protestant theologian Johann Gerhard , both in Tübingen. After lecturing in Tübingen, he became professor for systematic theology and social ethics at the Protestant Theological Faculty of the University of Bonn in 1969. In 1999 Honecker retired.

From 1970 to 1991 he was a member of the EKD Chamber for Public Responsibility, from 1986 to 1998 a member of the EKD Chamber for Church Development Service. From 1988 to 1991 he was President of Societas Ethica and from 1998 to 2004 a member of the Central Ethics Committee of the German Medical Association .

Honecker is a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 1999 .

Honecker's work focuses on the fundamentals of theological ethics , the foundations of Protestant church law , the relationship between church and state , political ethics and individual questions of bioethics .
