Martin Jakš (born September 6, 1986 in Pilsen ) is a Czech cross-country skier .

Career

Martin Jakš starts for Tatran Železná Ruda . He began his international career in 2003 in FIS races and at the 2004 Junior World Championships in Stryn , where he was 20th in freestyle races over 10 kilometers and with the Czech relay. However, he only achieved notable results in 2005 at the Junior World Championships in Rovaniemi . There he was fifth in the pursuit and eleventh in the 10 kilometer race. He made his debut in the World Cup in December 2005 in a 15-kilometer race (46th) in Nové Město na Moravě . He collected his first World Cup points as 25th on the same route in January of the following year in Otepää . In February 2006 he again took part in the Junior World Championships . Over 10 kilometers in Kranj, Slovenia, he won the silver medal behind Petter Northug and came third in the pursuit. At the national championships of the year he was the Czech champion in the pursuit in Candanchú . Jakš placed first among the top ten of the World Cup in December 2006 with the Czech relay team as seventh in La Clusaz . His first appearance at a Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo in 2007 , he took part in the pursuit, but did not finish. At the beginning of the 2007/08 season in Düsseldorf he was tenth in the team sprint with Milan Šperl . At the relay race in Davos in December 2007, he won his first and so far only World Cup victory. He finished the 2007/08 Tour de Ski in eleventh place. At the end of the season he reached his next podium in the World Cup in Falun with third place in the relay. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2008 in Mals , he won gold over 15 km classic. In the 2008/09 and 2009/10 season he was only able to achieve points in a few World Cup races. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 he achieved 22nd place over 15 km classic, 12th place in the team sprint and eleventh place with the relay. At his first Olympic participation in Vancouver in 2010 , he finished 29th in the individual races over 15 km freestyle and 27th in the 30 km pursuit race. With the relay he won bronze. At the 2010 Czech championship in Harrachov , he took silver in the sprint and silver over 15 km classic. He became Czech champion in the 10 km freestyle race.

After a weak start at the Tour de Ski 2010/11 , Jaks was able to finish the tour in eighth place overall with two fourth places and third place in Oberstdorf in the 20 km pursuit race. His best results at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo were 18th place over 15 km classic and eighth place with the relay. In the pursuit race over 30 kilometers, he finished 31st. He finished the season in 16th place in the World Cup overall ranking and 15th in the distance ranking. In January 2011 in Otepää he achieved sixth place, his best place in an individual World Cup race. At the Tour de Ski 2011/12 he came in ninth place in the overall standings. In February 2012 he won the Šumavský Skimaraton over 43 km classic. His best results at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme were 26th place in the 50 km mass start race and eleventh place in the relay. In the skiathlon he was 27th and over 15 kilometers in the free technique he finished 30th. In the 2013/14 season he was mostly placed outside the points. He finished the Tour de Ski 2013/14 in tenth place overall. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he reached 27th place in the skiathlon, 9th place in the team sprint, 37th place in the mass start race over 50 kilometers and eighth place with the relay. The following year his best results were 16th place in the 50 km mass start race at the 2015 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun and ninth place in the relay. Over 15 kilometers in free technique he was 17th and in skiathlon he reached 31st place.

In the 2015/16 season he finished 36th in the Ruka Triple , 19th in the Tour de Ski 2016 and 37th in the Ski Tour Canada . In January 2017 he became Czech champion in the 10 km mass start race in Nové Město. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti he came in 28th place over 15 km classic, 14th place in the 50 km mass start race and 11th place with the relay. In the 2017/18 season he finished 34th in the Ruka Triple and 16th in the Tour de Ski 2017/18 . His results at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang were eighth place over in the 50 km mass start race, seventh place together with Aleš Razým in the team sprint, ninth place in the skiathlon and 16th place in the 15 km race in the free technique . He finished tenth in the Czech cross-country relay. After the Winter Olympics, he has not yet started in any other races.
