The Martinsmadhütte is a mountain hut owned by the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) and owned by the Randen section ( Canton Schaffhausen ). The hut is named after the location Martinsmad, which is east of the Martinslochs .

location

The hut is located at an altitude of 2002  m in a wild landscape above the municipality of Elm in the canton of Glarus , nestled between the Zwölfihörner and the Laaxer Stöckli on the northern slope of the Vorab . The area is located in the Sardona Geopark , near the Glarus Thrust , which was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008 .

hut

The Martinsmadhütte is a typical summer hut and starting point for numerous hikes and mountain tours. A visit in winter is not recommended. The approach with snow is tricky and there are no worthwhile ski touring opportunities. The hut, which has 48 beds, is manned continuously in July and August, and only on weekends in June and from September to mid-October. The winter room is accessible all year round.

In 1907 the Martinsmadhütte was built as a shingle building with stone foundations. The drinking water came from the nearby Tschingelbach. The hut was the 100th SAC hut in the Swiss Alps . In 1938 the Martinsmadhütte was expanded to its current size in width and height as a solid structure made of Glarus stone. After the turn of the millennium, a gentle renovation took place.

Access

In summer, the hut can be reached in one and a half hours on hiking trails from the mountain station of the small Tschinglen-Alp mountain railway , difficulty level T3. The ascent on foot through the wild and romantic Tschinglen Gorge to Tschinglen Alp takes another hour and a half.

Another hiking trail leads from the Elm church through the landslide area to Firstboden, followed by a short descent to Tschinglen-Alp (Alp Nideren) to the hut trail , difficulty level T3, time required approx. 4 hours.

The ascent via Firstboden and the ridge to the Mittagshorn is more demanding ; an impressive alpine route (white-blue-white) with partially exposed areas, difficulty level T4 / (T5).

Tour possibilities

  • "Schneehorn" climbing garden : The climbing garden is located above the hut, in the direction of Vorab, at the foot of the Schneehorn at an altitude of 2605 m. The access is marked. The climbing garden offers well-secured climbs from the 2nd to the 6th level of difficulty .
  • Hike on the marked mountain path to the Mittaghorn ( 2415  m ), marked route secured with fixed ropes over the north ridge from Firstboden (1744 m); Difficulty level T4 / (T5).
