Mary Lou McDonald ( Irish Máire Labhaoise Ní Dhomhnaill ; born May 1, 1969 in Dublin ) is an Irish politician . She was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009 . She has been a member of the Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish Parliament , since 2011 and has been chairwoman of the Sinn Féin party since February 2018 .

Life

McDonald comes from a middle class family and grew up in Rathgar , a borough of Dublin. She studied English Language Literature , European Integration and Human Resources and received her Bachelor's degree from Trinity College in Dublin in 1992 . In 1993 she graduated from the University of Limerick to master . She then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for European Affairs in Dublin from 1994 to 1995, at Dublin City University between 1995 and 1998 , as a consultant at the Irish Productivity Center from 1998 to 2000 and then until 2002 as a trainer at the Foundation for Education and Training active. In 2002, McDonald became the political strategy coordinator at Sinn Féin.

McDonald is married and has two children.

McDonald became interested in politics as a teenager . At the end of the 1990s she became a member of Fianna Fáil , but after a while joined Sinn Féin because, in her opinion, she felt better at home there with her ideas about the unification of Ireland . In the 2002 general election, McDonald ran for Sinn Féin in the Dublin West constituency for the first time for a seat in the Irish Parliament, but was unsuccessful.

In 2004 McDonald was elected to the European Parliament for Sinn Féin in the Dublin constituency and gave up her position as coordinator. There she was a member of the executive committee of the Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . In the next European elections in 2009 she was not re-elected and thus left the European Parliament. Since 2001 she has been a member of the Board of Directors ( Irish : Ard-Chomhairle ) of Sinn Féin. In 2009 she replaced Pat Doherty as vice chairman of the party. Since February 10, 2018, she has been the party's successor to Gerry Adams , and the Northern Irish parliamentary group leader Michelle O'Neill was elected as the new deputy .

In the elections for the 31st Dáil Éireann in February 2011, she was elected for the first time in the Irish House of Commons in the constituency of Dublin Central . She successfully defended her mandate in February 2016 and February 2020 .
