Mary Reilly is an American film released in 1996 . The director was Stephen Frears , the screenplay was written by Christopher Hampton based on the novel “In the house of Dr. Jekyll ”by Valerie Martin , who wrote the famous novel The Curious Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde varied by Robert Louis Stevenson . The main roles were played by Julia Roberts and John Malkovich .

Mary Reilly is a maid to Dr. Jekyll. At first she looks at him in awe, but then a friendship slowly develops between the two. One day the Doctor's new assistant, Edward Hyde, shows up. Mary is fascinated by him. Only when it becomes apparent that Hyde knows a secret that Mary has entrusted to the doctor is his true identity revealed. Finally, Hyde relieves himself and the doctor by injecting the antidote in increased doses and both die.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of February 23, 1996 that the film was more in keeping with the spirit of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel than the earlier films because it relied less on special effects. Instead, the character of Mary Reilly with her conflicting feelings towards Jekyll / Hyde is worked out.
