Masaka is a city in southern Uganda near Lake Victoria and Lake Nabugabo with approx. 75,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the Masaka district of the same name and is located south of the equator on the highway from Kampala (approx. 140 km) to Mbarara and Rwanda . The closest port on Lake Victoria is Bukakata (ferry to the Ssese Islands ) to the east and around 40 km away .
Masaka has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Masaka since 1953 , but has a religiously mixed population (Christians, Muslims).
In 1979, when Tanzanian troops marched in and were involved in the expulsion of Idi Amins , the city was severely destroyed, which can still be seen in some places in the cityscape.
