history
Massachusetts General Hospital was founded in 1811, making it the third oldest general hospital in the United States and the oldest and largest in New England . Horace Wells demonstrated a (unsuccessful) application of laughing gas for painless tooth extraction . On October 16, 1846, an operation under anesthesia with the help of diethyl ether took place in the so-called ether cathedral for the first time in medical history .
In terms of organization, the Massachusetts General Hospital has been supported since 1994 by the non-profit organization Partners HealthCare , which, in addition to the MGH, is also responsible for a number of other hospitals in Massachusetts, most of which are also affiliated with Harvard University.
