Matai is an East Timorese place, Aldeia and Suco in the administrative office of Maucatar ( municipality of Cova Lima ).

The mountain of the same name, Foho Matai, is located five kilometers from Matai in Suco Ogues ( 9 ° 17 ′  S , 125 ° 15 ′  E ).

The place

Matai is located about 87 km south of the state capital Dili at an altitude of 61  m above sea level. There is a primary school in the village, the Escola Primaria Matai .

3013 inhabitants (2015) live in Suco Matai, of which 1543 are men and 1470 women. The population density is 245.6 inhabitants / km². There are 549 households in the Suco. Over 50% of the population name Tetum Terik as their mother tongue. Around 45% speak Bunak , which is otherwise the clear majority language in the other sucos of the administrative office. Minorities speak Tetum Prasa and Mambai .

Before the 2015 territorial reform, Matai had an area of ​​11.18 km². Now it is 12.27 km². The Suco is located in the southeast of Maucatar and is only connected to the rest of the administrative offices in the west via the Suco Ogues. In the north and east, Matai borders on the Suco Labarai , in the south on Camenaça and Debos (all administrative offices of Suai ). The Nabuk River flows along the northern border , along the southern border of the Karautun , which later together form the Camenaça River .

The larger settlements are in the south of Sucos on a small road: Maior , Matai , My Krus Minar , Quiar ( Kiar ) and Lohorai . In addition to Matai, Lohorai, which is west of Suai Airport, also has a primary school.

The four Aldeias Lohorai , Maior / Cunain ( Kunai ), Matai (formerly Cruz Mina Rai ) and Quiar are located in the Suco .

history

On September 9, 1999, four people were murdered by the Indonesian military and pro-Indonesian militias in Matai during the unrest following the independence referendum in East Timor .

During fighting between two youth gangs from the villages of Cunain and Matai , eight houses in Cunain were set on fire on January 4, 2008 . The PNTL National Police arrested 14 suspects, and two were later released. One of the suspects was the then Chefe de Suco Laurentino de Jesus , who denied the allegations. Fifteen affected families received support from the Ministry of Social Affairs and the World Food Program .

politics

In the 2004/2005 elections , Laurentino de Jesusu was elected Chefe de Suco. In the 2009 elections won Vicente Safera .
