Mathilde Verne , née Mathilde Wurm (born May 25, 1865 in Southampton , † June 4, 1936 in London ) was an English pianist and music teacher.

Life

The daughter of the organist and music teacher Johann Evangelist Wurm from Germany and the music teacher Sophie Niggli , like her sisters Mary Wurm , Alice Verne-Bredt and Adela Verne, was tutored by him and her mother and performed as a pianist in her childhood. She studied with Franklin Taylor at the Royal College of Music in London and in the mid-1880s at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt with Clara Schumann .

After returning to London, she began a successful career as a pianist. She made her debut at the Saturday Popular Concerts at St. James Hall with Wilma Norman-Neruda and Alfredo Piatti in Mendelssohn's C minor Trio, performed Beethoven's C minor Piano Concerto under the direction of George Henschel at the London Symphony Concerts and appeared from 1903 to 1907 regularly at the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts under the direction of Henry Wood and from 1908 to 1912 at the Sunday Afternoon Concerts .

In 1907 she founded the Thursday Twelve O'Clocks with Beatrice Langley at the Aeolian Hall , a chamber music concert series that lasted for almost thirty years. As a soloist she devoted herself in particular to the works of Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms .

Verne began to teach in Frankfurt. a. the teacher of Clara Schumann's granddaughter Julie. In London she briefly represented Edward Dannreuther at the Royal College of Music. After giving private lessons for a long time, she and her sister Alice founded the Mathilde Verne School of Pianoforte Playing (later Mathilde Verne College of Music ) in 1909 , which existed until the 1930s and enjoyed an excellent reputation. Verne claims to have taught 1,400 students in the course of her life, including musicians such as Moura Lympany , Herbert Menges , Thomas Dunhill , Harold Samuel , Solomon Cutner and her nephew John Vallier and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon , who later became the "Queen Mom".
