Matthias Breitkreutz (born May 12, 1971 in Crivitz ) is a former German soccer player .

He first played in the youth teams of SG Dynamo Schwerin and BFC Dynamo . In 1991 Breitkreutz moved together with Stefan Beinlich from PFV Bergmann-Borsig to the English club Aston Villa . Breitkreutz is the first German professional footballer in the English Premier League . In the 1994/95 season, Frank Pagelsdorf brought the two German midfielders to the then second division Hansa Rostock , where both immediately made promotion to the 1st Bundesliga as regular players.

The left-footed player was particularly noticeable in set pieces, as he scored some remarkable free-kick goals. He was often referred to as a "director".

Matthias Breitkreutz was characterized by ingenuity, but occasionally he was accused of a lack of work or training morale. In total, he scored twelve Bundesliga goals in 116 Bundesliga games. In the second division he played 33 games in which he scored three goals. Among his greatest achievements is the 6th place of FC Hansa Rostock in the Bundesliga season 1995/96, in which he played a major role, as well as the championship title of German indoor football with Hansa Rostock under coach Ewald Lienen .

In 2003 he ended his career at FC Augsburg . After completing vocational training as a healthcare professional, he began working in the social services of the Augsburg University Hospital .
