Matthias Klaus (born June 1, 1758 in Eisenstadt ; † August 27, 1833 in St. Pölten ) was an Austrian politician and 4th Mayor of St. Pölten.

Life

The son of Transylvanian parents was born on June 1, 1758 in Eisenstadt. During his training as a silk dyer , he worked in Lyon and other French cities. In 1787 he came to St. Pölten as a journeyman, where he married a dyer's widow and started a business. In 1798 he was elected to the Magistrate Council, which he would stay for 30 years.

During the war years 1809/1810 Klaus was responsible as civil commissioner for the French military hospital on Rathausplatz and the Saxon hospital in Viehofen . He was also the city's interpreter and spoke to the French Marshal Jean Lannes de Montebello as spokesman for the community . The city owes the comparatively light treatment by the French to this audition.

In 1828 the seventy-year-old was elected mayor. He died in office on August 27, 1833 in St. Pölten and was buried at the St. Pölten main cemetery.
