history
The locals (Mauterndorfer and Lungauer and Katschtaler on the other side of the Katschberg) call the place or the community "Mautndoaf". A corresponding spelling would be “Mautndorf” instead of “Mauterndorf”.
At the time of the Roman Empire , an important Roman road ran through Mauterndorf over the Radstädter Tauern . Today Roman stones from this time can be seen in the village . A Roman fort already existed at the point where the castle stands today .
Mauterndorf was first mentioned in a document in 1002, in 1023 the place came under the rule of the Archbishop of Salzburg and in 1217 it was elevated to market status. In the 13th century the Salzburg cathedral chapter set up a toll station, hence the name Mauterndorf . The place was the most important trading center of the Lungau in the Middle Ages. In 1253 the keep of the castle was built. In Mauterndorf in 1291/92 talks took place with the Bishop of Salzburg about the support of the Landsberger Bund , an uprising of Styrian nobles against Duke Albrecht I. In the 15th century the castle complex was expanded by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach and Provost Burkhard von Weißpriach . It served the cathedral chapter as an administration center. In 1806 it became state property.
In 1894, Hermann von Epenstein , a wealthy military doctor from Berlin, bought the castle and saved it from deterioration.
From 1939 to 1945 the castle belonged to the widow of his deceased godfather and “foster father” Epenstein Hermann Göring , even if this donation was never entered in the land register and later led to legal problems with regard to ownership. Göring had often lived with his godfather at the castle when he was young, but later stayed there very little. At the end of the war in 1945 he wanted to flee to Mauterndorf; however, due to the development of the front lines, this did not happen. Because of the financing of the construction of water pipes for Mauterndorf, he became an honorary citizen of the community. This honorary citizenship has not been officially revoked to this day. The mayor of Mauterndorf Wolfgang Eder does not consider a withdrawal to be sensible, because with Göring's death the honorary citizenship expired anyway.
In 1968 the state of Salzburg acquired the castle and renovated it from 1979 to 1982 with a capital of 20 million schillings (approx. 1.5 million euros).
In 1997 the rampage in Mauterndorf caused a sensation.
