Mauvages is a French commune with 259 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

geography

The municipality of Mauvages is located about 40 kilometers southwest of Toul , on the apex of the Rhine-Marne Canal between the valleys of the Ornain and the Meuse .

Mauvages tunnel

The crest stretch is covered by a 4,880 m long ship tunnel through which boats and ships were pulled by an electrically operated chain tug at a speed of 2.5 km / h until 2011 . After that, the tug was shut down and since then boats have been driving through the tunnel in convoy with their own engine. A VNF employee rides a bicycle alongside on the towpath. The eastern end of the tunnel is in the municipality of Mauvages, which is why the tunnel is also known as the Mauvages Tunnel . The tunnel was built between 1842 and 1847.
