Max Auer (musicologist)

Maximilian "Max" Josef Auer (born May 6, 1880 in Vöcklabruck , † September 24, 1962 in Bad Ischl ) was an Austrian musicologist .

Life

Auer had learned the profession of elementary school teacher in 1900. Through self-study he continued his education in the field of music and from 1901 to 1927 was choir master of the Liedertafel in Vöcklabruck. In 1911/12 he passed the state examinations in voice, piano and organ, was appointed professor in 1924 and founded a musicological publishing house in 1930. He was the first president of the International Bruckner Society , of which he was a co-founder. He is considered to be one of Anton Bruckner's most important biographers .

He bequeathed his collection of Bruckner manuscripts to the Austrian National Library .

He was buried in the Bad Ischl cemetery.
