Max Bauer (mineralogist)

Max Hermann Bauer (born September 13, 1844 in Gnadental , Württemberg; † November 4, 1917 in Marburg ) was a German mineralogist and university professor.

Life

The son of a pastor studied in Tübingen, Paris and Berlin. Bauer received his doctorate in Tübingen in 1867 and qualified as a professor in 1871 for mineralogy and geology in Göttingen. From 1871 he worked for the map recordings of the Königl. Geological State Institute in Berlin. In 1872 Bauer went to Berlin as a private lecturer. In 1875 he was appointed full professor for mineralogy and geology at the Albertus University in Königsberg . In Königsberg he was rector of the university in 1882/83. In 1884, Bauer succeeded the late mineralogist Friedrich Klocke as a full professor of mineralogy and petrography at the Philipps University of Marburg . In 1892/93 he was elected rector of the Philipps University of Marburg. In 1896 he was appointed secret councilor . Bauer was released from his official obligations in 1915, but took over the representation of his successor in 1916/17.

Bauer was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (from 1883) and the Society of Sciences in Göttingen (from 1900).

From 1874 Bauer was married to Julie Schnurrer; from this connection 2 sons and 1 daughter were born.
