Max Emil Friedrich von Stephanitz (born December 30, 1864 in Dresden ; † April 22, 1936 there ) was a German dog breeder.

Life

Obeying the wishes of his family, he embarked on a career as an officer . During a maneuver he enthusiastically watched a dog working on a flock of sheep. He was impressed by the way the shepherds could direct the dog by shouting and signaling. This is where the roots of the decision to breed the German Shepherd lie . He began to look around among the existing plots of land. On January 15, 1898, he bought the 3-year-old male Hektor Linksrhein from the Frankfurt shepherd and breeder Friedrich Sparwasser. Von Stephanitz gave the male the name Horand von Grafrath ; this and his brother Luchs Sparwasser became the ancestors of all German Shepherds.

As a result of his efforts, the Association for German Shepherds was founded in Karlsruhe on April 22, 1899 , and he was its first president.

He was buried in the Trinity cemetery in Dresden .
