Maxfield Parrish (actually Frederick Parrish ; born July 25, 1870 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † March 30, 1966 in Cornish , New Hampshire ) was an American painter and illustrator .

Life

Parrish was a son of the etcher Stephen Parrish . His first name is derived from the last name of his maternal grandmother, who was named Maxfield. At first he used this addition as a middle name, so "Frederick Maxfield Parrish", before he finally abandoned "Frederick" entirely. Parrish first attended Haverford College in Pennsylvania and then studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1891 to 1894 and at the Drexel Institute of Art in Philadelphia in 1895 . He was a student of Howard Pyle . In 1905 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters . In 1906, Parrish was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York . He created murals and numerous posters, covers for magazines such as Life or The Ladies' Home Journal ( The Housewife, monthly magazine for American women ) as well as book and advertising illustrations, for example for the Chesterfield cigarette brand . In the 1920s, he was one of the highest-paid advertising artists in the United States. Since the 1930s, his popularity and demand for his works decreased.
