Maximilian Wilhelm Freiherr von Stetten (born March 17, 1717 , † November 6, 1794 in Würzburg ) was of the Evangelical Lutheran faith. He was the Duke General Field Sergeant and Governor of Würzburg.

origin

His parents were Johann Christof von Stetten (1681–1730) from the Kocherstetten family and his wife, Freiin Anna Eleonora Regima von Jöstelberg (1684–1743).

Life

In 1754 Stetten was mentioned for the first time as a knight of the Teutonic Order , high princely Würzburg grenadier captain. At the beginning of the Seven Years' War , in 1756, Stetten was then part of the Roth-Würzburg Infantry Regiment in Bohemia . The regiment fought under Karl Alexander von Lothringen on the side of Habsburg and also took part in the Battle of Prague and the Battle of Leuthen against Prussia .

On October 14th, a battalion of the regiment under the command of Stetten fought in the battle of Hochkirch . During the attack on the Prussian lines near Rodewitz, 36 guns were captured. Stetten stood out in particular:

"During the storming of the entrenchments, the regimental commander [...] Colonel von Stetten had so distinguished himself both through leadership and personal courage that the Austrian generals met after the battle and asked him to bid for the knight's cross of the newly founded Maria- Theresia Order to apply. "

From 1758, Stetten commanded the entire regiment on behalf of Colonel Warnsdorf, who was still in captivity. From 1760 Stetten was a lieutenant colonel and in 1861 he officially took full command of the units of the Roth-Würzburg and Blau-Würzburg regiments , which, although serving in the same army , had hardly had any contact with each other.

On April 22nd, 1763, Stetten was promoted to major general and field sergeant general. Long after the war he was named "Herr zu Kocherstetten, Vogelsburg and Laschach, of the High German Order of Knights, councilor of the Hessian Ballei, and commander of Griefstedt, kais. Royal general sergeant major , in the Wirzburger Hof-, Staats- und Stand calendar " Generalfeldzeugmeisterer, high prince war council, and colonel over a regiment on foot, then local city and fortress commander, also real secret and court war council ". He held all positions, including the city and fortress commander of Würzburg, until his death in 1794.

From 1775–1779 von Stetten held the dignity of commander of the German Order Coming Ober-Flörsheim , from 1779 he was a member of the Weißensee district.
