Maxine Pamela Ometa McClean is a politician from Barbados , which was from 2008 to 2018 Secretary of State.

biography

After attending school, she first completed a degree at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), from which she graduated in 1978 with honors in public administration . In the following year, thanks to a scholarship from the Organization of American States (OAS) , she was able to complete postgraduate studies at Ohio University , which she completed in 1981 with a Masters in Business Administration and in 1982 with a Masters of Arts in International Affairs .

After returning to Barbados, she was a lecturer in the Faculty of Management Studies on the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies from 1982 to 1999 . Her lectures focused on communication , marketing , human resource management , industrial relations, management principles, strategic management and entrepreneurship . In 1986 she was also able to complete another postgraduate course at Louisiana State University with a Fulbright scholarship . In addition to her work at UWI, she was visiting professor at the Center for Management Development at the Institute for Management and Productivity of Barbados (BIMAP) and at Louisiana State University.

In 1999 she stopped teaching and founded Strategic Interventions Inc., her own management consultancy . As a management consultant, she held in-house seminars for several companies such as the Barbados National Bank, the Caribbean Development Bank and the National Petroleum Corporation.

As an entrepreneur, she was also on various boards of directors and supervisory boards of companies such as Bridgetown Cooperative Credit Union Ltd., Bridgetown Cruise Terminals Inc., Goddards Enterprises Ltd., RBTT Bank Barbados Ltd., the Barbados Stock Exchange Inc and Days Books. She was also the first female trustee of the Anglican Church of Barbados.

After the victory of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) in the elections for the House of Assembly in January 2008, she was first appointed a member of the Senate . Shortly afterwards, on January 20, 2008, Prime Minister David Thompson appointed her to the position of Majority Leader (Leader of Government Business) in the Senate and Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office. After a cabinet reshuffle on November 24, 2008, she was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade by Prime Minister Thompson. As Foreign Minister, she advocated further cooperation with the OAS.
