Mazgirt ( Zazaisch Mazgerd , from Armenian Medzgerd - "big fortress") is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the eastern Anatolian province of Tunceli . The city is located about 33 kilometers by road (linear distance: 12 km) southeast of the provincial capital Tunceli . The city was founded around the Mazgirt fortress, which probably dates back to the Urartian era. According to the historian Vartan, Medzgerd Fortress was one of the castles destroyed in 837 by the Byzantine emperor Theophilos during his battle for Mesopotamia .

geography

The district is located in the southeast of the province and borders the central district ( Merkez ) in the north, the Nazımiye district in the northeast and the Kovancılar district of the Elazığ province . In the west, a branch of the Keban reservoir forms a natural border with the Pertek district . The Munzur Çayı flows through the circle.

In addition to the district town (18% of the district's population), Akpazar (2,209 inhabitants) is another Belediye (municipality) belonging to the district. The district is completed by 68 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 69 residents. Darıkent with 311 inhabitants is the largest village, 22 of the villages have more inhabitants than the average.

At 12.6 inh. Per km², the population density is slightly higher than the provincial average, the urban population (both Belediye) is 44.19 percent.

According to the city seal, Mazgirt was elevated to a parish in 1945. Armenians lived in Mazgirt until the beginning of the 20th century .
