Mazgirt ( Zazaisch Mazgerd , from Armenian Medzgerd - "big fortress") is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the eastern Anatolian province of Tunceli . The city is located about 33 kilometers by road (linear distance: 12 km) southeast of the provincial capital Tunceli . The city was founded around the Mazgirt fortress, which probably dates back to the Urartian era. According to the historian Vartan, Medzgerd Fortress was one of the castles destroyed in 837 by the Byzantine emperor Theophilos during his battle for Mesopotamia .
