The McDonnell Douglas MD-12 was an aircraft design study in the 1990s. With up to 500 passengers, it should have a larger capacity than the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 in service and compete with the Boeing 747-400 . This requirement was to be achieved by equipping it with four engines and two continuous passenger decks. Concrete plans were published in April 1992.
Airbus also pursued similar concepts with the even larger Airbus A380 and Boeing with its Boeing NLA study, which was also not realized . The development of the MD-12 was accompanied by financing problems early on, and with the takeover of McDonnell Douglas by Boeing in 1997, plans were finally given up. Despite aggressive marketing, there was no concrete customer interest in the machine up to this point.
