The designation McDonnell Douglas F-110A carried the version of the American fighter aircraft McDonnell F4H-1 Phantom II , which was intended for the US Air Force , in the early 1960s . Since the delivery of these machines was a long time coming, the USAF borrowed a number of machines from the Navy . However, the original F-110A planes did not fly under this designation after delivery, as a reorganization of the confusing American aircraft designations came into effect on September 18, 1962. After standardization, the USAF machines were given the designation F-4C Phantom II .
