Mechthild Wiswe

Mechthild Wiswe (born June 1, 1938 in Wolfenbüttel ; † November 23, 2017 in Hanover ) was a German historian , folklorist and author .

Life

Mechthild Wiswe was the daughter of the secondary school teacher Hans Wiswe and grew up in Fümmelse (now part of Wolfenbüttel). Shaped by the historical work of her father, she joined the Braunschweigischer Geschichtsverein at the age of 16 , to which she belonged for over 60 years until her death, in recent years on the board and as a member of its honorary advisory board. After graduating from the Wolfenbütteler Gymnasium im Schloss , she studied pedagogy, folklore, German, history and geography at the universities of Braunschweig and Göttingen . After completing her doctorate on the subject of the field names of the Salzgitter area with Heinrich Wesche , the holder of the new chair for Low German Philology created in 1954 , she initially worked at the Hanover Historical Museum from 1968 to 1973 . From 1973 to 1997 she worked at the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum , most recently as senior curator and head of the Folklore Department. In this role she published a large number of studies on the folk life of the city ​​of Braunschweig , the Braunschweiger Land and the folklore of Eastern Lower Saxony .
