Master of the Codex Manesse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The masters of the Codex Manesse are those medieval painters who are not known by name and who were commissioned between around 1300 and 1340 to create the full-page pictures for the Codex Manesse song manuscript . Her portraits of minstrels are among the masterpieces of Gothic book illumination . The term "Master of the Codex Manesse" is not common in art historical literature.

There are several miniature painters . The so-called painter of the basis of the Manessische Liederhandschrift created the main part with 100 miniatures probably between 1300 and 1315. He painted them in a very uniform structure with strong opaque color painting. The remaining 27 pictures were then created by three or four other painters, who are referred to as supplementary painters of the Manessian song manuscript . They painted the pictures, which appeared somewhat paler in view of the overall work, with mixed colors. All in all, the artistic design of the font and the extremely splendid coloring of the illustrations make the Codex Manesse a very valuable medieval complete work.
