A medieval painter who painted a three-winged altar for the Erfurt Mariendom at the beginning of the 15th century is known as the master of the Erfurt unicorn altar .

The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after this late Gothic work known as the Erfurt unicorn altar . The central panel shows Mary as the Queen of Heaven with the unicorn surrounded by saints. The representation on the altar in Erfurt is counted among the outstanding examples of the numerous medieval, often as in Erfurt magnificent, picturesque interpretations of the unicorn as the embodiment of Christ and virtue.

It is one of the special sights of the cathedral and is now located in its transept .
