Melanie Jayne Lynskey (born May 16, 1977 in New Plymouth , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand actress .

Career

Lynskey attended New Plymouth Girls High School in 1994 and, fascinated by acting, took part in various school plays. Fran Walsh and Peter Jackson discovered her there for the role of 15 year old Pauline Parker in their film Heavenly Creatures .

The international success of this film made Kate Winslet known, but even after moving to Los Angeles , Lynskey did not initially open up any significant prospects as an actress. That is why, after only receiving rejections, she moved back to New Zealand after only six weeks, where she began studying at Victoria University in Wellington . During this time she got a small film role in Peter Jackson's The Frighteners .

Thanks to her friend Gaylene Preston, Lynskey took on the role of the "nice" stepsister in the fairy tale adaptation Forever and Always . In addition, director and screenwriter Mark Tapio Kines hired her in 1999 for the drama Foreign Correspondents . This was followed by roles in Detroit Rock City with Edward Furlong , in The Cherry Orchard with Alan Bates (last film by Michael Cacoyannis ) and in Shattered Glass with Hayden Christensen . The films Because I'm a Girl and Abandon were also a commercial success.

In Coyote Ugly alongside Piper Perabo as well as in Sweet Home Alabama - Love in a detour alongside Reese Witherspoon , Lynskey had a supporting role as a close friend of the main character. From 2003 to 2015 she played the role of Rose in the television series Two and a Half Men , since 2007 with recurring guest appearances.

In 2009 she appeared in a supporting role in Sam Mendes ' comedy Away We Go , and in The Informant! she played Ginger Whitacre, the female counterpart to Matt Damon . She also appeared in the Oscar-nominated tragic comedy Up in the Air by Jason Reitman as the youngest sister of Ryan Bingham, played by George Clooney . In 2017 she played the lead role in the crime film Strange in the World . Lynskey was also seen in the Girlboss series.

In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
