history

Mensano was first mentioned in 972 in a document of the Winizzone del fu Ugo. At first the place was a feudal system of the bishops of Volterra , then it was under the government of Volterra, against the will of the bishop of Volterra, Ildebrando Pannocchieschi (1185-1211). On October 15, 1227, the people of Mensano submitted to the government of Siena. For a short time the place was under the government of Florence in 1260 , but Siena ruled Mensano again in 1266. The Cassero fortification dates from this time , of which only a few remains remain today. The fortification withstood an attack by Henry VII in 1312 , but was damaged by the troops of Alberico da Barbiano in 1397 . In the conflict between Siena and Florence, the place surrendered to the Medici troops on November 25, 1554 and thus became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . Until 1592 the place belonged to the diocese of Volterra and was then divided by Clement VII into the new diocese of Colle di Val d'Elsa (today the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino ).
