The Mercedes-Benz X 166 is a full-size sports utility vehicle from the German car manufacturer Daimler AG . The model was unveiled to the public in April 2012 at the New York International Auto Show and first launched in the United States in June 2012 before being launched on November 24, 2012 in the German market. The X 166 represents the second generation of the GL and is technically closely related to the M-Class (W 166) . In the course of the facelift in November 2015, the GL was renamed GLS . The X 166 is built at the US Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa . In April 2019, the next generation X 167 was presented at the New York International Auto Show .
The X 166 provides the technical basis for the BJ90 from the Chinese brand Beijing .
Technical specifications
While a 4.7-liter V8 twin-turbo petrol engine with an output of 320 kW (435 hp) in the GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY and a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine with 190 kW (258 hp) were launched in Germany. are offered in the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC , the latter is also available in the USA, but the V8 petrol engine is offered in two versions: on the one hand the GL 450 4MATIC with 270 kW (367 hp) and on the other hand the GL 550 4MATIC with 320 kW ( 435 hp).
The top model GL 63 AMG was launched in November 2012 .
All models are linked to the 7G-Tronic Plus 7-speed automatic transmission with automatic start-stop and feature 4MATIC permanent all - wheel drive as standard . Optional one are air suspension ( AIRMATIC ) and a roll stabilization ( Active Curve System ) available.
With the facelift at the end of 2015, some engines experience a performance increase. Except for the AMG version, all vehicles are now delivered with the 9-speed automatic transmission 9G-Tronic . In addition, new assistance systems and the latest generation of telematics will be introduced into the GLS.
