The Mercury Marquis was built from 1966 to 1985 by the American automobile manufacturer Mercury , which is part of the Ford concern, of the full-size class there or (from 1982) of the American mid-range.

In the fall of 1966, Mercury introduced the Marquis as its flagship, a two-door hardtop coupé with a standard vinyl roof and extensive equipment, which was powered by a 6.6 or 7.0-liter V8 engine. It remained in this form in the 1968 model year. For the 1967 model year 6510 and 3965 for the 1968 model year were produced.

At the time, the Brougham, which was only available in 1967, and the Mercury Park Lane were the top models of the brand's sedans .

For the 1969 model year, a new generation of the large Mercury appeared; At the same time, the Marquis range was expanded to include two sedans, a convertible and a station wagon called Colony Park . The Marquis series represented the top series of the Mercury brand, including the Mercury Monterey , the Monterey Custom and the sports version Marauder . The base engine in the Marquis was now 7 liters. In 1970, the Marquis Brougham appeared as an even more expensive and opulently equipped series above the Marquis; at the same time the convertible was withdrawn from the offer. From autumn 1972, the large Ford and Mercury models had new bodies that were 5 centimeters shorter with the same wheelbase. In addition to the Monterey, Mercury also had the Marquis and Grand Marquis as a coupé, sedan and Colony Park station wagon with a seven-liter or 7.5-liter V8. The latter was standard in the Marquis models from model year 1974. In 1975 Monterey and Monterey Custom ceased to exist. H. from now on all full size Mercurys were called Marquis / Marquis Brougham; The Grand Marquis now ranked above these two models as the new top model. The base engine shrank to 6.6 liters in 1975 and 5.8 liters in 1977, the 7.5 liter remained available as an option. For the 1979 model year, Mercury launched a smaller and lighter Marquis. It only differed in details from the sister model Ford LTD , which was presented at the same time . There was still a choice of coupé, sedan and station wagon with the designations Marquis , Marquis Brougham and Grand Marquis . V8 engines with a displacement of 4.9 or 5.8 liters were now used for the drive. A three-speed automatic transmission was always standard. In 1981 a smaller 4.2-liter V8 formed the basic engine, the two larger eight-cylinder units remained on offer. In 1982 the dummy ventilation slots on the front fenders were no longer available and the 5.8-liter was only available in the special police versions.

The big Mercury was continued practically unchanged under the name Grand Marquis from model year 1983 . From 1978 to 1982 333,923 pieces were produced.

In Venezuela, however, the model was assembled by Grupo Consorcio 1390 SA on behalf of Ford. There the model was sold as the Ford Conquistador .

In the fall of 1982, Mercury put a new, again smaller, rear-wheel drive Marquis into production, the parallel model of the new Ford LTD, which was based on the Fox platform of the Ford Fairmont .
