Merefa ( Ukrainian and Russian Мерефа ) is a city in the Ukraine in the Kharkiv Oblast with about 22,000 inhabitants (2018). The city has a train station and a glass industry .
geography
Maerefa is located on the M 18 trunk road , a section of the European route 105 , 22 km southwest of Kharkiv .
It is divided into the actual city and the settlement Selekzijne ( Селекційне )
history
Merefa was founded in 1595 and in 1938 Merefa was granted city rights. From October 1941 to September 5, 1943, the city was occupied by Wehrmacht troops. In May 1942 the Second Battle of Kharkov took place near Merefa , one of the last victorious kettle battles of the Wehrmacht.
