An exemption from memory is a polemical, ironic, fictional document which, in a joking manner, frees the recipient from the otherwise imputed duty to notice something and to respond to the arguments of other people. The term is now part of Internet folklore and was - allegedly - originally inspired by the term of exemption for sports and field service in the German armed forces . By publishing a comment exemption on Usenet, the exhibitor wants to express that the recipient publishes articles that suggest that he does not understand the topic and is antisocial and ignorant . Often the recipient is also supposed to be exposed to ridicule.
