The Meru Central District was a district in the province of Eastern in Kenya . The capital was Meru . In 1999, 498,880 people lived in the district on an area of ​​2,982 km². An estimate by the authorities indicated the number of inhabitants in 2008 as 569,662 people. The district was on the equator . About 41% of the population lived below the poverty line .

As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan districts were dissolved. The area is now part of Meru County .

education

In 2005 there were 367 primary schools in the Meru Central District. The school enrollment rate was around 50%. The district also had 72 secondary schools . The Meru University College of Science and Technology and the Kenya Methodist University were located in the capital Meru .

Healthcare

Meru Central District had more than 160 healthcare facilities in 2005, including 29 hospitals. 11 hospitals were run by the state, another 10 were run by church sponsors. The most common diseases in the district were malaria , respiratory diseases and worm diseases . The HIV - prevalence in 2005 was 38%. About half of the available hospital beds in the district were occupied on average with HIV-positive or AIDS-infected patients.
