Camp de Meslay-du-Maine

From the beginning of the Second World War until the defeat of France (September 2, 1939 to June 17, 1940) there was a camp in Meslay in which more than 2000 German and Austrian civilians, mostly men from the Paris region, were interned. In view of the German advance, the camp was evacuated on June 17, 1940, and the prisoners were transferred first to Angers and then to Albi . Among the prisoners were:

  • Johnny Friedlaender (1912–1992), graphic artist and etcher, returned to Paris after the war
  • Norbert Mühlen (1909–1981), resistance fighter, managed to escape to the USA
  • Leon Askin (1907–2005), actor, he was allowed to leave the camp after six months because his US visa had arrived.
  • Karl Farkas (1893–1971), Viennese actor and cabaret artist
  • Heinrich Rodenstein (1902–1980), educator, exile and educational politician
