The Messestadt Riem is a district in the east of Munich . The Messestadt Riem, part of the city district 15 Trudering-Riem , is located entirely on the site of the Munich-Riem Airport , which was closed in 1992, and today houses a residential area for 16,000 people as well as numerous office buildings as well as the New Munich Trade Fair Center and the Riem Arcaden shopping center .

history

The Messestadt Riem is the second youngest district of Munich after Freiham . After flight operations were relocated to the new Franz-Josef-Strauss Airport in 1992 , the old airport buildings in Riem were demolished in the following years and construction of the New Munich Trade Fair Center and the corresponding subway connection began in the mid-1990s. In 1998 the fair was finally able to move from its too narrow exhibition halls on the Theresienhöhe to the spacious new building in the exhibition center. Numerous companies also settled on the former airport site.

Immediately to the west of the West Entrance, the Messesee was created, which is 390 m long (north-south) and 46 to 94 m wide (east-west), with a water surface of 2.6 hectares Joseph-Wild-Strasse, which ends on its east side at the west entrance to the exhibition center. The lake is bordered by Olof-Palme-Strasse (west), Am Messesee (east) and Willy-Brandt-Allee (south).

In the southern part of the former airport, a new building area with rental and owner-occupied apartments has been created on the outskirts. With the Riem Arcaden there is also a shopping center. With numerous traffic-calmed zones , many kindergartens and three primary schools, the trade fair city is a suitable place to live for young families.

The first projects for car-free living in Munich have existed here since 1998 .

The first multi-family passive house and the first multi-family zero-energy house in Munich were built here.

The Messestadt sports club, SC Arcadia Messestadt München eV, was founded in November 2006 and is at home in the east of the Messestadt.

Riemer Park

Riemer Park is located south of the residential area . The Federal Garden Show took place here in 2005 , after Munich had won the corresponding competition in 2000. For this purpose, a large landscape park has been built since 2002 and, after the Federal Horticultural Show, opened to the public as a recreational area as Riemer Park and the third largest park in the state capital of Munich. With great effort, a lake was created in its center , which became known as the Buga Lake (officially Riemer See ). From east to west, the lake is 800 m long, 150 m wide, 10 ha large, up to 18 m deep and contains 100,000 m 3 of water. It is an upscale groundwater lake that can also be used for swimming. Because the water level in the area is too low and also fluctuates strongly with the seasons, a concrete tub was built for the lake, into which three pumps constantly pump 40 liters of water per second. To prevent the flowing groundwater from accumulating on the concrete wall of the lake and submerging cellars in residential buildings, a drainage pipe was laid under the lake. There is a bathing beach on the east bank, while a silting zone with aquatic plants has been created on the west bank, where a footbridge crosses the lake . Immediately in front of the west bank are two more, shallow silting basins with aquatic plants that are only 1100 and 800 m² in size. There is a 20 meter high hill in the park.

Transport links

Messestadt West underground station

Transport Technically, the fair site with the subway stations is fair site West and fair site East of the subway line U2 and the bus lines 139, 183, 186, 190, 234, 263, 264, and N74 connected to the transport system of the city. The A 94 also runs past the trade fair city in the north. A connection of the Munich S-Bahn directly to the exhibition grounds (Messestadt Nord) is being discussed as part of the Erdinger Ringschluss . This means that significantly shorter travel times between the airport and the exhibition center can be achieved.
