history

Wilhelm and Sofie Mestemacher founded a bakery in 1871. In 1896 a special pasteurization process was introduced, which allowed the bread to have a shelf life of up to 12 months without the addition of preservatives. In 1910 Wilhelm Mestemacher opened a special bread bakery for the production of pumpernickel. Wilhelm Mestemacher died the following year and his wife Sofie managed the company from then on. In 1936 the bakery was passed on to her sons Paul and Heinrich. The company remained family-owned, but fell into a crisis in the 1970s. The owners Willy and Lore Schittenhelm, a granddaughter of Wilhelm Mestemacher, decided in 1985 to sell the company to the Detmers families, the brothers Fritz and Albert Detmers took over management. A year later, Mestemacher offered packaged wholemeal bread from controlled organic cultivation. In 1994 the art project Panem et Artes was initiated. In 2000, the traditional company logo was updated with “the lifestyle bakery”. In 2002 Mestemacher took over Aerzener Brot und Kuchen GmbH (formerly Aerzener Brot GmbH). In the same year, the “Mestemacher Award Manager of the Year” project honored top women in German business.

In 2004, the project “Mestemacher KITA-Preis” started, which supports day-care centers that stand out with outstanding educational achievements. In 2006, the “Mestemacher Top Father of the Year Award” project highlighted fathers who, through family management based on partnership, support their wives in pursuing their own careers alongside their families.

Products

Originally, the Mestemacher bakery focused on the production of the original Westphalian pumpernickel . Over the course of 135 years of tradition, the company's range has grown. It includes areas such as B. Wholegrain rye breads and pumpernickel, wholegrain rye breads from organic farming, muesli mixes and cereals and frozen and fresh cakes. Mestemacher products are certified according to the International Food Standard (IFS). Some have already received the “Prize of the Best in Gold”, which is awarded by the DLG for special quality standards.

Under rabbinical supervision, the company produces kosher-certified batches of bread for Israel.

social commitment

By awarding three different prizes, the company is committed to a better work-life balance for both parents and to gender equality in the German economy when it comes to awarding management positions in top and middle management. The initiator of this commitment is Ulrike Detmers , who, as part of her professorship for business administration at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, dedicates herself to the topic of gender equality in business and family. At Mestemacher, Detmers heads the Brand Management and Social Marketing department and has designed the following projects.

KITA price

The Mestemacher KITA Prize was launched in 2001. The aim is to strengthen the range of educationally high-quality childcare in Germany in order to make it easier for parents to combine work and family. The Mestemacher KITA Prize is awarded annually and is endowed with prize money totaling 16,750 euros. A selection process decides which day-care center will receive the award.

Mestemacher Award Manager of the Year

The "Mestemacher Award Manager of the Year" has been awarded annually since 2002 to women in management positions in German business. The requirement profile according to which the respective award winner is selected depends largely on her professional career. The project design pursues the following priorities:

  • Highlighting the economic skills of women specialists and presenting female models for young female managers
  • Supporting the equality concept of the Amsterdam Treaty of 1997
  • Supporting the Federal Cabinet resolution of 1999, in which equality was decided holistically as the guiding principle of the federal government

The prize money of 5,000 euros will be donated to a third party at the choice of the winner. People from politics and business like Renate Schmidt or Renate Künast have taken part in the award ceremony in recent years.

Mestemacher Award Top Father of the Year

The “Mestemacher Top Father of the Year Award” is intended to consolidate the family model based on partnership, in which both parents are equally responsible for bringing up children. A growing awareness of fatherly responsibility should make it easier for mothers in particular to be able to practice their learned profession alongside the family.

Since 2006, each year prize money of 5,000 euros has been presented to two fathers who live a flexible family model based on partnership and thus promote their wives' careers. The award ceremony takes place in Berlin and is traditionally under the patronage of the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs.

The 2012 award winner is Arne Gericke , who has been a member of the European Parliament since 2014 and is a member of the Free Voters .
