Meta Rogall , b. Otten (born April 20, 1935 in Norddeich ; † September 1994 ) was an innkeeper and pioneer of youth culture from the Norddeich district of the city of Norden in East Friesland . In her homeland she is revered as the “mother courage of East Frisian rock history”. She was the operator and landlady of the Haus Waterkant restaurant , the name of which referred to its location directly at the foot of the North Sea dike . The pub was popularly known almost exclusively under the name Meta .

Life

Rogall was a Frisian fisherman's daughter and grew up in poor conditions. After initially working as an office clerk in Dortmund, she soon returned home with her life partner, who she met there, and in 1961 took over the simple pub founded by her parents. After a performance by the Aurich band The Black Shadows caused an unusual amount of enthusiasm and calls for encores at the time, Meta wanted to found the best store with the best music between Amsterdam and Hamburg based on the model of the Star Club in Hamburg. This actually remained a provisional arrangement until her death. However, with East Frisian persistence, drive, a feeling for trends and a lot of improvisational skills , she managed to turn this rum shop into a music shack . She performed pioneering work by engaging many, mostly moderately well-known German , Dutch and British bands - mostly from the rock genre - live to the then extremely tranquil East Frisia. These included Birth Control , the Scorpions, and Jane . In later years Otto Waalkes was a DJ at the Waterkant house for a short time. In order to attract and keep the musicians, she hosted them on site. To this end, she not only procured a residence permit for Germany for South African Howard Carpendale , who was then a rock musician and, among other things, a king- size Elvis imitator - he also started his career in her pub in 1966. As a result of what was then unique in the area, their restaurant became widely known, especially among young people, so that its catchment area soon extended to the entire north-west of Germany. Come on, let's go to Meta developed into a winged word. The bar still exists today as a disco .

Rogall herself impressed with her exotic appearance - to the end if possible in a tight mini skirt and for a long time in the company of a parrot, which uttered bitter curses in the disco. Drinks were served in the old stroller, and when people weren't “spitting”, there was something with the change wallet. This made it very popular with the youth, but earned a shake of the head from others. So she got into trouble with the northern authorities, who were finally able to close the same when they found 50 grams of hashish in their restaurant. After a three-month break and a demonstration in front of the North City Hall, however, it was able to reopen. Finally Meta fell ill with cancer, to which she succumbed in September 1994.

It was only after the youth of the time had risen to responsible positions that Meta Rogall received a certain social recognition from city leaders for her pioneering work in culture. Today she is traded as a cult person and is often referred to as the mother courage of East Frisian rock history . In the mid-1970s, the Low German songwriter Hannes Flesner dedicated Meta Rogall on his LP Johann Iken, musst äben kieken the song Bi Meta in Norddiek (At Meta in Norddeich) . In 2000, the Soltau Kurier Norden published a book dedicated to her. In 2007 the rock band Jane released a CD entitled Live at METAz . It was only posthumously in 2009 that a DVD with extensive documentation of her life was released in the Medienzentrum Norden.

Since 2010, Rogall's work has been recognized by a rock musical entitled Meta, Norddeich . For the so far most successful production of the Landesbühne Niedersachsen Nord with Angelika Bartsch in the leading role as meta, all 31 planned performances in the East Frisian cities were almost sold out before the premiere on January 23, so that over 15,000 spectators by the end of the 2009/2010 season had seen the musical. The other planned performances for the next season were also sold out by this time.
