Knowsley is a metropolitan borough in metropolitan county Merseyside in England . The administrative seat is the city of Huyton . The borough, which is named after the village of Knowsley , also includes Halewood , Kirkby , Prescot and Whiston . The area borders directly on Liverpool . There is a city partnership with Moers in Germany.
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The urban districts of Huyton with Roby, Kirkby and Prescot, most of the Whiston Rural District and a small part of the West Lancashire Rural District were merged. These local authorities previously belonged to the county of Lancashire .
In 1986, Knowsley became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the county’s superordinate administration. Knowsley remained part of Merseyside for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police , fire services and public transport.
Halewood is a location of the automotive industry with production facilities of Tata Motors for models of its subsidiary brand Land Rover as well as the transmission manufacturer Getrag .
