reception
The press response to the first season was divided.
“The 'Meuchelbeck' series is definitely a good start. It is bursting with 'power'. It's all in it: The ensemble is in great shape, that is to say: it presents a lot of weird, but unrecorded types with dust-dry humor. The punch lines are right, the local color is right, and the dramaturgy (directed by Erik Haffner and Klaus Knoesel) ensures one cliffhanger after the other, so that at the end of each episode you absolutely want to know how things will continue - in Meuchelbeck. "
“The lovingly designed opening credits make it clear that 'Meuchelbeck' has nothing in common with the tranquil regional series that the third programs usually show, and image design (Tom Holzhauser, Till Müller) and music (Patrick Schmitz) also play a major role in the very special atmosphere of this mini-series. The light in the restaurant alone is an art in itself. Special praise is due to the production company Zieglerfilm (Cologne), which also produced 'Die Anrheiner' for WDR, and also for the cast. The actors are not typical leading actors who have been seen a hundred times, but all of them are excellent, and most of all they are a perfect match for their characters. 'Meuchelbeck' is definitely too good to only run in 'Third'. "
“That is certainly all meant somehow mystery-wise, even the 'Breaking Bad' kind of egg-drenched theme melody screams: Hello, weird! But then too many clichés remain at the beginning: Markus' gnarled sister Mechthild, for example. Or an overly often themed wall in the family guesthouse that has been drawn in in an impractical place, which of course houses a walled-in secret - which a reasonably experienced series viewer knows after about five minutes. "
Trivia
In the pilot episode it is mentioned that the nearest police station and the closest doctor's office are in Wachtendonk . The shooting took place further south u. a. in Dormagen (districts of Mitte, Stürzelberg and Zons ). Filming locations for the second season were again Dormagen, Grevenbroich and Cologne. In Grevenbroich, filming took place in the old school in the Noithausen district. In Cologne, since the second episode of the first season, it has been filmed in the Luther Church in the Nippes district.
The fictitious MEU license plate was used for production.
When it was first broadcast on the Third (WDR), Anke Engelke acted as a 1970s-style TV announcer before each episode.
In the last episode of the first season, Sarah's mother Jennifer, who was believed to be dead, suddenly appears at the end. This twist was obviously discarded by the scriptwriters for the second season, as this incident is never mentioned or cleared up in the series again.
