Miami Gardens is a city in Miami-Dade County in the US state of Florida with 107,167 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Miami Gardens is located 6 miles north of Miami . Neighboring communities are Miami Lakes , Opa-locka and North Miami Beach (Miami-Dade) as well as Miramar and West Park ( Broward ).

history

On May 13, 2003, the CDPs ( Census-designated places ) Andover, Bunche Park, Carol City, Lake Lucerne, Norland, Opa-locka North and Scott Lake were merged to form the City of Miami Gardens after a prior vote among the population. When it was founded, the United States Census Bureau estimated the population of the city at 100,842.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 107,167 inhabitants were distributed over 34,284 households. The population density was 2068.9 inh / km². Miami Gardens is the largest city in Florida with a majority of African American residents. 18.3% of the population identified themselves as whites , 76.3% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 2.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.2% to several ethnic groups. 22.0% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 45.7% of all households and persons aged at least 65 years in 28.7% of all households. 78.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 3.28 people and the average family size was 3.66 people.

30.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 16.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 46.8% of the population were male and 53.2% were female.

The median annual income was $ 44,215, with 19.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 45.17% of the population, 51.09% spoke Spanish and 3.72% spoke Haitian .

Facilities

Sunshine State Arch

In the city there is the Hard Rock Stadium , the home stadium of the NFL franchise Miami Dolphins . It is also the venue for the Miami Hurricanes , the college sports team at the University of Miami . With the Calder Race Track , a horse racing track , there is another large sports facility in the city.

The schools Miami Norland High School , Miami Carol City High School and St. Thomas University and Florida Memorial University are located in the city of Miami Gardens. In addition, Miami Gardens has 17 elementary schools , four middle schools, and the North Dade Regional Library .

On May 19, 2014, the Sunshine State Arch was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Miami Gardens is very conveniently located. Interstate 95 , Florida's Turnpike (toll road), US Highway 441 and Florida State Roads 7 , 9 and 826 ( Palmetto Expressway ) cross at the Golden Glades Interchange on the southeast edge . State Roads 817 , 821 ( Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike , toll), 823 and 860 also run through the city . In addition to the Interchange train stop is Golden Glades of Tri-Rail , which was also the long distance buses of Lines Greyhound hold. The national Opa-locka Executive Airport borders the city directly to the south . The Miami International Airport is located about 15 km south of Miami Gardens.
