The Mica Dam in Canada , British Columbia on the upper Columbia River is the tallest dam in Canada and North America. At the time of its completion, it was also the highest dam (but not the highest dam ) on earth at around 244 meters . It is currently in 17th place worldwide . It is located 134 kilometers north of Revelstoke .
The dam has a vertical core made of clay and support bodies made of sand and gravel on both sides . The dam was built under the Columbia River Treaty for flood protection and the generation of hydropower . In 1977 the hydropower plant with an output of 1740 (possibly 1805) megawatts was put into operation. The dam is operated by BC Hydro . The reservoir is called Kinbasket Lake or Kinbasket Reservoir. At almost 25 billion cubic meters, it is also one of the largest on earth. The reservoir of the Revelstoke dam below , Lake Revelstoke, extends to the foot of the Mica dam.
