Michael Bünker (born April 26, 1954 in Leoben ) is an Austrian Evangelical Lutheran theologian . From January 2008 to the end of August 2019 he was Bishop of the Evangelical Church AB in Austria .

Life

After primary school in Radenthein and grammar school in Villach , Bünker studied Protestant theology at the University of Vienna . In 1981 he did his doctorate with Kurt Niederwimmer in the subject of the New Testament on the subject of "Letter form and rhetorical disposition in 1st Corinthians".

He was vicar in the Weinbergkirche in Vienna - Döbling , then owner of the second pastor's position in the Evangelical parish church in Floridsdorf . In 1991 he was entrusted with the management of the Evangelical Religious Education Academy (ERPA). In 1999 he was elected to the Oberkirchenrat. Since 2003 he has been an honorary professor at the Evangelical Faculty of the University of Vienna . In 2006 he was appointed General Secretary of the Community of Evangelical Churches in Europe (CPCE). In 2007 Bünker was elected to succeed Herwig Sturm as Bishop of Austria, whose office he took over on January 1, 2008. The official inauguration took place on January 27, 2008. Until his election as bishop, he appeared together with Karl Weinberger and Sissy Kocner as a member of the Floridsdorfer Kirchengfraster , a church cabaret group, with several programs throughout Austria.

Bünker initiated the Weg des Buch pilgrimage route , which was opened in 2008 . He is also an avid hobby drummer who plays for the rock band Kreuzweh .

Since October 2011 he has been the patron of the development policy campaign Bread for the World Austria .

On May 4, 2019, Michael Chalupka was elected as his successor as Bishop of the Evangelical Church AB in Austria from September 2019.
