Michael B. Chertoff (* 28. November 1953 in Elizabeth , New Jersey ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ) and lawyer. He was Secretary of State for Homeland Security from February 2005 to January 2009 .

Michael Chertoff graduated from Harvard University Law . He served as a lawyer with Latham & Watkins . He was later from 1990 to 1994 as the successor to Samuel Alito federal prosecutor for the district of New Jersey, judge at the federal appeals court for the third court circle and state secretary in the Justice Department ( Assistant Attorney General ). He was nominated on January 11, 2005 by US President George W. Bush to succeed Tom Ridge for the office of Minister of Homeland Security. The confirmation from the US Senate and the swearing-in took place on February 15, 2005. With the end of Bush's term in office, Chertoff left the government in January 2009.

After the end of his service, Chertoff founded the Chertoff Group in the US capital Washington in March 2009, which offers both business and government agencies its advisory services on security and risk management. Chertoff's former Vice Minister Paul A. Schneider and former State Secretaries of the Department of Homeland Security, Charles E. Allen and Admiral Jay M. Cohen , were appointed as directors of the young company . Michael V. Hayden , the long-time chief of all US secret services , could also be appointed to the top management.

In the context of the discussion on the tightening of security controls in international air traffic on the occasion of the attempted terrorist attack on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 , Chertoff attracted attention in the US media landscape by lobbying for the introduction of nude scanners.
