Michael Eissenhauer (born November 28, 1956 in Stuttgart ) is a German art historian and has been Director General of the National Museums in Berlin since 2008 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1975, Michael Eissenhauer completed an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker until 1977 and then studied art history , classical archeology and German literature in Tübingen and Hamburg until 1985 . He obtained both his master's degree (1983) and his doctorate (1985) at the University of Hamburg . After an academic traineeship at the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg (1987–1989) and his work as a scientist at the Germanic Historical Museum in Berlin (1989–1990), he was curator at the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg from 1991 to 1995.

From 1995 to 2001 he was director of the art collections of the Veste Coburg , then until 2008 director of the Hessen Kassel Museum Landscape (formerly Staatliche Museen Kassel), which was restructured and extensively expanded under his leadership.

Michael Eissenhauer was a member of the board of ICOM Germany from 2002 to 2007 and president of the German Museum Association from 2003 to 2010 . Since 2009 he has been a member of the art and exhibition committee of the Federal Foreign Office , of the board of trustees of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain , and of the program commission of the Martin-Gropius-Bau .

The Board of Trustees of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation appointed Michael Eissenhauer in December 2007 to succeed Peter-Klaus Schuster as General Director of the State Museums in Berlin . He was introduced to this office on October 31, 2008. On August 1, 2016, he also took over the post of director of the Gemäldegalerie as well as the sculpture collection and the Museum of Byzantine Art of the Berlin State Museums for an initial three years . During his term of office he is perceived as a “cultural manager” on the one hand, but on the other hand the State Museums in Berlin need “a designer, not an administrator”.

Michael Eissenhauer has been teaching at the Institute for Art and Visual History at the Humboldt University of Berlin since the 2012/13 winter semester . He was appointed honorary professor by them in 2016 .
