Michael Gilday (born May 1, 1987 in Yellowknife , Northwest Territories ) is a Canadian short tracker .

Gilday started his sport at the age of four, in 2005 he started for the first time at the Canadian Junior Championships and finished eighth overall after he had achieved a good fifth place over 500 meters. A year later he took part in both the Canadian Championship for Juniors and Seniors. Both starts were successful, even if he was without a medal. While he narrowly missed one in the junior championship as fourth over 1000 meters, he managed to finish sixth in the senior championship. Because of these successes, Gilday was nominated for the first time for the Short Track World Cup in the 2006/07 season , where he immediately finished second in his second race with the relay. He also came seventh in the 3000 meter competition at the 2007 Winter Universiade . Because of this and other decent placements nationally and internationally, he ranked ninth in the Canadian ranking.

In the 2007/08 season , Gilday only had one appearance in the World Cup, but again achieved second place with the relay. Since he also won silver over 1500 meters at the Canadian Championships and also reached podium finishes at the National Team Selections , he was sixth in the Canadian rankings and thus permanently nominated for the following 2008/09 World Cup season . He started this very successfully with a third place in the relay and a second place over 1000 meters, his first World Cup podium on an individual distance.

In addition to the short track sport, Gilday also successfully practices cross-country skiing , in this discipline he was Western Canadian champion in a junior category. His family won the Gagné Family Award in 2007 for their contributions to ice skating in Canada. Gilday himself was also twice a male NWT junior athlete .
