Michael Jeannée (born February 5, 1943 in Olomouc , Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ) is an Austrian tabloid journalist , war correspondent and columnist . During his career as a journalist he wrote for Bild am Sonntag and Express , among others, and is currently writing a column for the Kronen Zeitung .

Life

Jeannée went to school in Sankt Gilgen and Vienna . Following his graduation , he began Jus -Studies, however, broke this and went in 1963 to Argentina , where he stayed for four years and worked as a sports reporter and proofreader at a German-language newspaper. In 1967 Jeannée went to the Wiener Express . After Hans Dichand took it over in 1970 and merged it with the Kronen Zeitung a year later , Jeannée first switched to the Kronen Zeitung , where he stayed until 1973. He then accepted an offer from Bild am Sonntag , where he worked as chief reporter until 1985 and, in this capacity, reported on the mass suicide under Jim Jones in 1978 in Jonestown .

In 1985 he moved back to the Krone to take on the post of chief reporter. From 1993 he was the successor of Roman Schliesser the " Adabei reporter" of the paper and as such reported mainly from the Viennese high society . In 2003 he lost this position, among other things due to allegations of misogyny . However, he came back to the Krone in 2007 and from then on acted as a commentator.

In the course of his career, Jeannée reported on subjects as diverse as sporting events, the " college piggy " or the Gulf War ; His interview partners included Udo Proksch , whom Jeannée tracked down in Manila , Bela Rabelbauer during his escape from the Austrian authorities, and Idi Amin .

Journalistic style

In his function as a columnist, Jeannée repeatedly arouses criticism from those affected - also through his sometimes populist and contemptuous comments. For example, the Austrian Greens complained in 2008 when he accused Eva Glawischnig , then the third president of the National Council , of giving the wrong impression by playing a charity football game against racism that there was racism in Austria. The state spokeswoman for the Vienna Green Party, Birgit Meinhard-Schiebel , insinuated that Jeannée's statements were "unworthy of a journalist".

Michael Fleischhacker , then editor-in-chief of the press , accused him of being one of the “letter worms” who “now enrich the Dichandian and Faymannian intestinal flora” - in other words, to ingratiate themselves with the publisher and Federal Chancellor .

In August 2009, Jeannée wrote in his column “Post from Jeannée” in the Kronen Zeitung after a 14-year-old burglar was fatally wounded by a police officer in the back: “Those who are old enough to break in are old enough to die. "The sentence was voted" Unspruch des Jahres "in the Austrian Word of the Year 2009 election. The satirist and writer Michael Ziegelwagner parodied the sentence in a birthday greeting to Jeannée in 2013 , which was printed in the advertising section of the Kronen Zeitung : “Those who are old enough to drink wine are old enough to color” (namely gray hair).

Convictions by the press council

Between 2012 and 2014 Jeannée was convicted a total of six times by the Austrian Press Council for violating the journalistic code of honor. On November 30, 2012, Jeannée demanded the removal of courier boss Helmut Brandstätter , with the following words, which he addressed to Christian Konrad , chairman of the supervisory board : "Among us hunters, dear Mr. Konrad: Hegeabooting (Brandstätter) overdue!" In July 2013, Jeannée violated human dignity in a gloss on two robberies in which the perpetrators were killed in self-defense, in particular with the finding that robbers deserved a bullet. On January 10, 2014, four young men suspected of a crime were described in a column as “miserable, vile pack” and “bastard” and asked how you feel “when you get your own gangster visage from the newspaper”, whereby the photos of those affected by a surveillance camera were attached to the column. In an article dated May 11, 2014, Jeannée described the EU MP Eugen Freund and the Minister Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek as “political furuncles”.

controversy

In September 2011, there was a dispute between the German rapper Sido and Jeannée on the ORF casting show Die Große Chance . Thereupon, after Jeannée had declared backstage in front of the camera: “This Sido is destroyed”, the Kronen Zeitung published a very negative article about the rapper under the title “The life of the 'ORF star' as the only mix of crime and tactlessness ". Sido successfully sued the Kronen Zeitung for defamation and for damages in the amount of 7,000 euros.

In 2017, there was a process between Jeannée and the Austrian media group that received media attention . Jeannée had an alcohol addiction, he had attributed bad character traits to the editor of the media group, Wolfgang Fellner .
