Michael "Mike" Künzle (born March 5, 1965 ) is a Swiss politician ( CVP ). He has been Mayor of Winterthur since 2012 and was last confirmed in office in 2018.

Michael Künzle has been a member of the CVP since 1996. He began his political career in Oberwinterthur , where he headed the district party presidium for ten years from 1996. In 1999 he was elected to the large municipal council ( legislature ) of Winterthur. From 2001 he held the function of the parliamentary group president of the CVP. In 2005 he was chosen by his party as a candidate for the vacant city ​​council seat of Hans Hollenstein (CVP), who had previously been elected to the Zurich government council. In July 2005, Künzle prevailed against his remaining opponent Marlies Bänziger ( Greens ) in the second ballot . In 2006 and 2010, Künzle, who was in charge of the Safety and Environment Department, was confirmed in office. On June 17, 2012, the resigned Ernst Wohlwend ( SP ) was elected to the city council with 15,104 votes . Künzel's only competitor, Yvonne Beutler (SP), received 7,937 votes, and she moved into the city council. After ten years under social democratic leadership, the Winterthur city council moved back into bourgeois hands.

Künzle is considered to be consensus-oriented, business-friendly and close to the people. He contested his city council election campaign with the promise to slow down population growth and to get involved in job growth. Künzle focuses on economic and security policy and trying to bring the city's finances into balance in the long term. He advocates a business-friendly parking lot policy and the construction of a new headquarters for the Winterthur city police and, as city president, launched two austerity programs. In addition, he is responsible for the development and implementation of a new cultural model, a new museum concept and the development of the cultural subsidies in his political agenda.

In addition to his party membership in the CVP, he is a member of various other clubs and associations, including the House Owners Association , the Officers ' Society and the Herrenstuben Society in Winterthur .

Education and previous activities

Michael Künzle grew up in Kloten and attended grammar school at the Zürcher Unterland canton school in Bülach , where he obtained his Matura in 1985 (type B, with Latin). He studied law at the University of Zurich and graduated in 1992 with a licentiate . After three years as an assistant at the Research Center for Legal History at the University of Zurich, he became Legal Secretary at the District Court of Winterthur , then Legal Secretary at the District Attorney's Office in Winterthur and, from 2001 to 2004, District Attorney in Dielsdorf . On January 1, 2005, he took up a position as public prosecutor , which he gave up again in July 2005 after being elected to the city council of Winterthur. Most recently, Künzle held the rank of major in the Swiss Army .

Private life

Michael Künzle is married and has four children. The family lives in Oberwinterthur.
