Michael Martens

Michael Alexander Martens (* 1973 in Hamburg ) is a German journalist and book author.

Life

Michael Martens grew up in Hamburg and in the Lüneburg Heath . As a schoolboy he worked for various daily newspapers in northern Germany, after graduating from high school he went to Chicago , Illinois (USA) for a year .

From 1995 to 2000 he worked - supported by the Foreign Office - as an editor for various Russian-German newspapers in Bishkek , Almaty , Kiev and St. Petersburg , such as the newspaper of the German Kyrgyzstans and the St. Petersburgische Zeitung .

In 2001 he went to the newsroom of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . In 2002 he was posted to Belgrade as Southeast Europe correspondent . From 2009 to 2018 he was also responsible for Turkey and reported from Istanbul , from 2015 from Athens . Since 2019 he has been reporting on south-east Europe, based in Vienna.

Book publications

In 2011 Martens published the book Heldensuche - The story of the soldier who did not want to kill . It deals with a Wehrmacht soldier named Josef Schulz , the 1941 in the Second World War to have been shot during the occupation of Yugoslavia by German Wehrmacht by his own men after he reportedly refused to shoot hostages. The book has received positive reviews several times.

In 2019 Martens published under the title Im Brand der Welten. Ivo Andrić. A European life, a biography of the diplomat and Nobel laureate in literature Ivo Andrić . The book received many positive reviews and was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in the non-fiction / essay category.

Quarrel with Alexis Tsipras

In the summer of 2013, Martens conducted an interview with the then Greek opposition leader Alexis Tsipras . The politician then complained about allegedly “unethical questions” from Michael Martens. Martens then published the complete audio recording of the interview. According to Martens, it was the first time an interviewee had complained about his questions.
